Measure the usable frontage from the door to the edge of where decor belongs, then count the risers your display can spill down.

• Apartment stoop or duplex entry (4–5 ft, 0–2 steps): 9–12 pumpkins
• Standard suburban porch (9–14 ft, 3 steps): 28–35 pumpkins plus 2 bales
• Wide columned porch (15–20 ft): 45–55 pumpkins, stalks at each column
• Double staircase or estate entry: 70+ pumpkins, mirrored both sides

Where to place pumpkins on a front porch

Anchor the largest pumpkin at the base of the door frame, cascade sizes down the steps in odd-numbered clusters, and use minis to break the hard line where the step meets the riser. Keep a clear 36-inch walking path — that's the difference between styled and cluttered.
