Corn mazes and hayrides

Mazes get muddy after rain and dark fast after 6pm. Closed-toe shoes, a phone light and a meeting spot for teenagers who wander off. One change worth knowing this year: P Bar Farms in Hydro, for 25 years the state's best-known maze, announced that 2025 was its final season — so the closest big mazes are now the two below.

Four rules for a porch that actually looks styled

Whether you haul your own from a patch or we deliver, these are the things that separate a magazine porch from four orange pumpkins in a row.

Buy odd numbers, in three sizes

A porch reads best with groups of three or five in clearly different sizes — a large jack, a medium, and a cluster of pie or mini pumpkins. Same-size pumpkins in a row look like inventory, not a display.

Height first, pumpkins second

Start with a straw bale or a corn stalk against the column, then set pumpkins around the base. Height is what makes a display visible from the street.

Keep them off the concrete

A pumpkin sitting flat on wet concrete rots from the bottom in about a week. Set them on a bale, a board or a doormat edge and they'll last through November.

Mix white and green in, not just orange

Lumina (white), Jarrahdale (blue-green) and warted heirlooms are what make a porch look styled rather than seasonal-aisle. Two or three non-orange pieces is usually enough.
